Guide on How to Build Your Own Electric Motor Bicycle
Electric bicycles are definitely the rave these days. What with high prices of gasoline, pollution and traffic congestion, people just want to find a better mode of transportation to take them to places they have to be. Most of them like something that is very convenient, at the same time something that will allow them to save some cash. And these are exactly what an electric bicycle does.
But what’s even more exciting about electric bicycles is how easy one can own them. Buying a new one is way cheaper than buying a new car or a traditional motorcycle. But building one is way better because it will save you even more money. And building your own electric bike is very easy. You just have to start with an old bike and an electric bicycle kit. You should also follow this step-by-step instruction, and in no time, you will be riding in style with your own eBike.
1. To start, you need to find out if your bike is the type that can be converted into an electric bicycle. You can do this by refering to the manual that comes with the electric bike motor conversion kit you have. Make sure also that your electric motor conversion kit is the right size for your bike.
2. Once you figure out those important things, you now need strip the bike down and remove all the unnecessary accessories. You have to bring it down to its bare minimum.
3. Next, you have to remove the front wheel of your bike. Do this by turning the bike upside down, then releasing all the air from the tire. You then have to unscrew the axle nuts of the wheel to completely remove it from the frame. In doing this, make sure that you don't damage the brakes of the bike.
4. After removing the front wheel, you then install the new front wheel that comes with your electric bicycle motor conversion kit. This new front wheel have wires attach to the that will connect to the battery pack of the motor. Because of this, you have to properly attach the wheel to the frame so that the wires won't be on the way. To be sure about this, refer to the manual to know which side of the bike the wires should need to exit from. This is because some conversion kits have them on the left, while some are on the right. Once you figure this out, make sure that you secure the wheel by tightening the axle bolts using a wrench. Adjust the brakes if necessary to ensure they work properly.
5. Then, you have to mount the battery pack to the bike. Where you put thm may vary depending on the model type of your conversion kit. However, most battery packs for electric bicycle motor kits use the rear axle and seat clamp as support.
6. Once the battery pack is in place, you now have to mount the controllers. Though there are some variations on this part of the kit, they usually go below the handlebars or under the seat rack. Use zip ties or bungee cables to install the controller properly.
7. Next, install the throttle. Do this by removing the right handlebar grip. You just have to slide the throttle over the handlebar and tighten them using a wrench.
8. Once that is done, you need to run the wires and connect them properly to the motor and controllers. They should also be connected to the throttle. Refer to the manual to ensure that all wirings are on their proper places. Use zip ties to tame the wires so that they won't be in the way when you finally start riding your bike. Lastly, you have to connect the wires to the battery to complete the circuit.
9. Test the ignition to ensure that everything is in their proper places. If you follow all the steps properly, you will start riding your electric bike in no time.
