Hinge PinA Few Guidelines On Repairing A Broken Hinge In Your Small Wooden Chest
Fixing a broken hinge on your wooden jewelry chest needs extra care to avoid damaging the box.
Gently remove the broken hinge with the help of a chisel or block plane. Use sandpaper to sand down the spot once you take out the hinge. Use a 150 grit sandpaper for this. When you clamp the box in a bench vise, pad the box with a sanding disc. This will keep the box from sliding all over the place.
You can consider using a new or an old hinge or even make one for your box. You can shape the hinge by hand using a spokeshave and block plane, or use a roundover bit and a router to shape it. Unless you are really comfortable with using a router, don't use it to mortise the hinge as it is very risky. Then, you can trim it and glue it back into the base of the box. Leave it on for 12 hours to dry.
When it is totally dry, sand it again with the 150 grit sandpaper, and then drill the holes for the wire hinges. To make the box look brand new, use only a matching stain and oil finish! Here is another method for replacing a hinge that's been broken. Clamp the hinge in position with an 'f' style clamp after you've placed it where you want it on the box. Remember to use a mechanical pencil and mark the width, depth, and height of the hinge. Unclamp the hinge and carefully chisel stop cuts on the lines you've marked with a small hammer and a new razor blade. Repeat it until you are sure the hinge fits perfectly. Then use the 150 grit sandpaper or a new razor blade to mortise the hinge. Align and clamp the lid to the hinge after you install the hinge on the jewelry box.
The type of hinge you want mounted affects the time taken to fix it. For fixing a barrel hinge, you just need to ensure that you drill the holes in the correct spot both in the base as well as the top. You can get this done easily with a drill press but hold the box in position with a stop block on the drill press table. An auto-centering bit comes in handy if it is a surface mount hinge that you are trying to fix. But make sure that the top and the bottom of the box are in perfect alignment before you drill. A useful tip is to first mount the hinge to the base and then to the top of the box.
